Fuel conditioner notches up significant fuel efficiency gains in real-life trials

 A drop-in fuel conditioner, SulNOxEco, has lowered fuel consumption significantly in recent trials with conventional marine fuels.

In a three-month trial on board the 60,000 dwt ultramax bulk carrier, Paolo Topic, owned by Marfin Management S.A.M. of Monaco, SulNOxEco cut very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) consumption by 6.4% in the vessel’s MAN two-stroke engine. In separate trials lasting five months involving a Hamburg-based shipping company and a north German University, the additive reduced marine diesel consumption in a two-stroke engine by more than 5%.

Manufacturer, SulNOx Ltd, claims that the biodegradable conditioner offers a market-ready tool for owners and operators using fossil-based fuels to lower fuel consumption immediately with no capital expenditure. The conditioner improves combustion efficiency and fuel lubricity, the company claims.

Confirmation of its efficacy demonstrates its potential in helping owners and operators to meet global and regional emission regulations, including the IMO’s carbon intensity index (CII), as well as offsetting costs associated with the EU Emissions Trading System.

SulNOx CEO, Ben Richardson said: “We are excited that Marfin has shown such significant savings on board Paolo Topic, which could amount to c. $200,000 per annum and represent around 200% return on investment. The fact that Marfin has agreed to purchase more product and expand the trial to as many as six vessels will result in significant revenues for the group.

“Meeting the maritime industry’s emissions reduction target is an ecological and moral imperative and also makes perfect business sense,” he continued.
